Organisers & Partners

The Association for Culture, Education and Communication (ACEC)

is a non governmental organisation, the aims of which are to create understanding, support international cultural exchanges, deepen education and create space for the further continuation of mutual communication.

ACEC projects are focused on current social events and they develop, strengthen and improve communication within Slovakia itself, on an international basis and also in rural areas and regional risk regions from the international point of view

As a part of its educational activities, ACEC focuses on the preparation and implementation of educational programs and communication strategies for socially challenged groups (education training and tutorial programs and projects focused on the Roma minority in Slovakia). ACEC has enduringly implemented two training programs in Roma settlements in eastern and central Slovakia. The Healthy Communities Program (since 2002), aimed at improving the health status of Roma and to raise awareness in the health field in Roma settlements and the Láčho Drom civic association project fund for the education of young Roma artists YRAEF (since 2005)A case study on the Healthy Communities project was developed  in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (see: http://www.euro.who.int/en/what-we-do/health-topics/health-determinants/socioeconomic-determinants/publications2/2010/poverty-and-social-exclusion in-the-who-european-region-health-systems-respond)

The study comprehensively describes the situation faced by the target group (people in segregated Roma settlements) and systematic work through accredited training programs developed for the implementation of projects in Roma settlements.

The education projects are accredited by the Slovak ministry of education.  The Community Worker education program (2004) develops knowledge and skills in practice with the Roma community (accredited by the Slovak Ministry of Education).

The Healthy Communities project was presented at the 9.- 10.10.2008 European Commission conference in Brussels – 'Communicating Health' in the social exclusion panel and How to reach everyone in an excerpt under the name of ‘inequalities: "Fieldwork with the Roma population as an example"

With its projects in the fields of culture and communication, ACEC applies new, non-traditional forms of communication in its projects – and since 1999 has implemented numerous projects deemed unique from the international point of view; in New York, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Warsaw, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Minsk etc. The non-traditional approach has – via means of culture and education – enabled the creation of new communication networks applied in national and international contexts. The associations projects assist in the deepening of existing relationships as well as in the creation of new mutual ones.

HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

Healthy Communities is a project focused on widening health awareness and improving the health status of Roma in Slovakia Within the project there are 91 healthcare assistants and coordinators in the field, 102 general practitioners and 26 and paediatricians, the respective regional governing bodies and regions and schools. The project has a direct influence on the populations of the 68 Roma settlements – which represents 45 000 Roma inhabitants. The creation of a well functioning network in the field creates interest in cooperation on the part of other organisations - both in Slovakia and abroad – which deal with Roma issues and specific issues regarding Roma health. The following partners have actively become involved in the program: First aid centres, The Trnava university department of public healthcare, the University of Wisconsin department of Human Biology and Women's Studies - Green bay, and Partners for Democratic Change Slovakia (PDCS).
A Healthy Communities case study (2008) has been put together in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in which the conditions faced by the program's target group - namely segregated Roma settlement inhabitants - are complexly described, along with the systematic work undertaken with regard to these issues via means of the implementation of the education program itself. The study is to be made available via the WHO website and includes the reasons behind the creation of the project, the social - economic and political context within Slovakia, specific methodology forms and uses as well as the results achieved and guidance ascertained from real life experience.
The Healthy Communities project was presented at the 9.- 10.10.2008 European Commission conference in Brussels – 'Communicating Health' in the social exclusion panel and How to reach everyone in an excerpt under the name of 'inequalities: "Fieldwork with the Roma population as an example"
